Miss Lily's: Genuine Jamaican Soul in SoHo

★★★★☆ 4 / 5 Average 4.0 / 5

With its vintage sound system, jerk chicken that earns the name, and Red Stripe on tap, Miss Lily's is the most authentic slice of Jamaica in New York.

Miss Lily's on Houston Street has been a fixture of New York's Caribbean dining scene since 2011, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The decor — reggae posters, retro Jamaican advertising, a sound system that plays roots and dancehall at the right volume — sets the tone before the food arrives.

The jerk chicken is legitimately excellent: properly smoked, with a Scotch bonnet heat that builds rather than assaults. The oxtail is fall-off-the-bone tender, served with rice and peas and fried plantains that are caramelised just right. The festival — the slightly sweet fried dumpling that is essential Jamaican beach food — is as good as you will find outside of Kingston.

Service is warm and unhurried, which suits the vibe. The rum cocktail list is serious. Miss Lily's is not trying to be fine dining; it is trying to make you feel like you are somewhere good, and it succeeds.
